Mooresville,
founded in 1873, was named for John Franklin Moore who built a train
depot and cotton-weighing -platform between Statesville and
Charlotte. He bought 500 acres and persuaded the Atlantic, Tennessee
and Ohio railroad to run tracks through the center of town.
The Mooresville
community prides itself on small-town charm, but Mooresville has
undergone some dramatic growth during the past decade‚ transforming
from a struggling mill town into a thriving community of over 20‚000
people, and it is one of the fastest growing municipalities in North
Carolina. This growth is due not only to the city’s convenient
access to interstates 77, 85 and 40, its rail service and proximity
to Charlotte, but also to its wonderful climate. Mooresville is in
the Piedmont section of North Carolina, so it has four distinct
seasons while being close to both the mountains and the coast.
Once just
another refueling stop for motorists along I-77‚ Mooresville has
become a vacation and retirement destination for those who want to
enjoy the area’s abundant natural resources‚ including Lake Norman.
From the moment 520 miles of shoreline were created in the 1960s by
the damming the Catawba River, the body of water has been a strong
lure for boaters, fishermen and vacationers. Almost immediately
second and summer homes began to pop up around the lake, and even
after four decades the area still exerts a strong pull those who
enjoy the water. “But over the years it has become a
primary-residence location, and that growth has continued as the
cities around here have grown, making it easier to live here and get
to work from here. New shopping areas, restaurants and recreations
everything you might need here, most of the residences are occupied
full-time.”
After several racing teams moved to the area in the early ‘90s,
Mooresville’s nickname became “Race City USA. Today Mooresville is
home to more than 50 race teams, and more than 250,000 NASCAR fans
visit the town every year. Mooresville is zooming into the 21st
century. The town is attracting visitors with a bustling auto-racing
industry‚ drawing newcomers with quality schools and modern health
care‚ and getting the attention of large businesses with a
progressive approach to growth.
The Mooresville
Graded School District‚ with six schools and 4‚200 students‚ also
has an excellent reputation. The south Iredell-Statesville schools
also enjoy an outstanding reputation
