Founded in 1893 and incorporated in 1905, the town of Cornelius can base its origins on a dispute over cotton weighing. Two cotton firms in the town of Davidson disagreed over the appointment of an offical town cotton weigher. After a heated election, legislation was enacted to permit the town to hire a cotton weigher. The opposing firm relocated most of its operations south of the town limits of Davidson. Due to impassible road conditions during rainy weather, many cotton farmers chose to sell their crops to the relocated cotton firm just south of Davidson. Encouraged by their sucess, the owners of the cotton purchasing business were inspired to build a cotton mill. Financial backing for their venture was found in Benjamin Cornelius. Though originally incorporated as "Liverpool", the town was later renamed Cornelius in honor of J. B. Cornelius.

The damming of the Catawaba River and creation of Lake Norman in 1963 by Duke Power had a great impact on the development and growth of Corenelius. Not only providing the area with hydroelectric power, Lake Norman created excellent lakeside real estate and recreational opportunities.
